Author(s): Sally Saffer
Audience: Elementary School Children

Tamara and Justin continue playing in the woods even as darkness falls. A nearby owl advises them to go home and adds a final warning using an aphorism, "a word to the wise is sufficient." The children become lost in the woods. The story teaches them that there are consequences to not listening to wise words of advice. It is a story that parents and grandparents relate to and it makes it easy for children to understand the lesson. The story provides an opportunity for children to develop values, insight, and common sense.

The Learning to be Wise series is designed to increase creativity and improve skills in reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem solving. The series is written primarily for children ages 8-10 (grades 2-4); age appropriateness will depend on an individual's reading ability.
