It can be exciting and a little frightening to move out into the world on your own, whether it’s simply to the mall with friends or off to college or career. For teen girls who are beginning to take charge of their own lives and decisions, it can be a serious stressor - for both the girls and for those who care about them.
As girls gain independence and leave behind that parental safety net, the dilemma becomes: how will she keep herself safe? Unfortunately most girls are not taught basic safety principles which can help prevent, avoid, or deal with the many dangers in the world. So, what is supposed to be one of the happiest of times, often becomes an open invitation to a multitude of potentially dangerous scenarios, dangers for which many girls are unprepared to handle.
This new juvenile nonfiction book, Taking Flight For Girls Going Places, is designed to help teen girls and young women maintain independence and safety. It helps prepare them for the many hazards they may face. With over 1600 safety tips, the book highlights simple preventive measures and self-defense strategies that offer increased awareness, deeper confidence, and various options to challenges relating to
• Home, school, street, college, and workplace environments
• Dating, unhealthy relationships, and expressing consent
• consuming alcohol and drugs
• driving and public transportation
• online communities and using social media
• protection from a physical attack

Taking Flight For Girls Going Places promotes awareness, empowerment, and responsibility as girls learn to assess situations, use their voice, trust their instinct, and embrace simple, practical knowledge needed to successfully journey forward toward their fullest potential.
The book is easily relatable for girls, as well as parents and educators who use the material as a helpful tool for ongoing discussions about safety. It is also a great read for males (from teens to dads!) to gain an understanding of the obstacles females face every day, and how they can assist in changing the status quo and promote safety for all.
