Alex, the Music SMART Maestro is the 3rd book in Dr. Mary Massey’s SMART Parts series about Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Alex is one of the characters from the series introductory book, Ellie Rae Discovers Eight Ways to be SMART. Alex is Music SMART and loves to sing, play instruments, and listen to many different types of music. In this rhyming, early childhood story, we see Alex using her Music SMART abilities to enhance some of her other multiple intelligences or SMART parts. As children learn about their SMART parts, they are fortified in their sense of self by better understanding their strengths, valuing the strengths of others, and discovering how to work together to grow and learn.

In his book, Frames of Mind, Dr. Howard Gardner discusses intelligence as multi-faceted and expandable, rather than a single, fixed function. He defines intelligence this way, “Intelligence is the ability to find and solve problems and create products of value in one’s own culture,” rather than a score on an IQ test. Gardner states, “Anything that is worth teaching can be presented in many different ways. These multiple ways can make use of our multiple intelligences.” Dr. Massey’s SMART Parts series introduces children to Gardner’s theory through an age-appropriate rhyming story, with each character representing one of the eight intelligences. We get to know each character by observing their strengths and seeing how they use those strengths to stimulate all of their intelligences.
