Mindful Moments with Maude, by Dr. Pamela Cappetta, is a gentle story that weaves together the concept of mindfulness, a love of animals, and a close bond between a young girl and her grandmother. The title character, Maude, is a dog inspired by the author’s beloved Australian Shepherd. Cappetta also introduces the concept of Mindfulness Day—a day without electronics and busyness.
When Addie, age 6, visits her grandmother for a summer get-together, she becomes frightened by a summer storm in the night. After Addie wakes up the next morning, Maude, grandmother’s dog, shows her how to relax using a simple breathing technique—the same technique that Grammy taught Maude when she was afraid of storms as a puppy.
Throughout Mindful Moments with Maude, Maude teaches, soothes, and lovingly instructs Addie on finding ways to deal with her fears and busyness, and enjoy the simple moments in her day. Maude also helps her young friend become aware of things she's never considered before: the feel of bare feet on the floor in the morning, the smell of lavender in clean clothing, and the restorative calm of a day, even an hour, without cell phones, laptops, and other electronic devices.
Mindful Moments with Maude expands on the current trend of bringing mindfulness into young children's lives. These “moments” go beyond the teachings of sensory awareness to include relational and emotional awareness among humans and their pets.
Bonus material is included at the end of the story. Ten questions for parents, teachers, and caregivers are intended to encourage discussion with children on the material in the book and to further develop interactional moments for readers.
