Many years ago Martha West looked out the front door to see her husband and children loudly encouraging and applauding an acrobatic earthworm that dangled precariously over the edge of their front step.
This incident, long remembered by the West family, inspired her to write "Jake, Dad and the Worm." Martha has drawn the worm scientifically correct, without the cartoon face so often seen in children's books.
The reader is invited to appreciate the lowly earthworm as a hero of nature. The story encourages children and their parents to seek out simple experiences with a sense of wonder.
