The Brementown Musicians CD was created with the desire to introduce children to classical music through storytelling.
In this varied adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale, four aging domestic animals who, after a lifetime of hard work, are about to be disposed of by their masters. The animals embark on the road but do not know where to go or what to do. In time they are greeted by a guiding spirit who encourages them not to feel downtrodden or worthless but to recognize their inherent worth and talents by connecting to the music that plays inside them. All the animals have a characteristic musical piece that is unique to them which resonates their true soul.
As the story unfolds, children hear classical piano music interspersed (though never overlapped) with the narrative. Drawn from three centuries of piano literature, each piece is varied in style, harmony, and tempo. The selections, chosen with children in mind, are short pieces taken from famous composers such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofieff. The interplay of storytelling and music enhances the listening experience for the children and engages them in enjoying and learning about classical music. Through repeated listening, children not only begin to feel comfortable with classical music but will cultivate an understanding of the communicative bond between the two art forms. The story and the music become inseparable. This combination of stories and music encourages children’s imagination while at the same time fostering an appreciation for classical music and the creative arts.
